8 Reasons To Invest More in Your Fly Fishing Gear

You don’t need to break the bank. But investing more in your fly fishing gear will make you a happier angler. This article discusses the reasons why.

Look. Most of us can’t afford $1,000 fly rods and $500 reels. And fewer of us can afford (or justify) a whole quiver of them.

But I’d argue that most folks also will be frustrated when they buy a $100 fly rod, a $60 reel, and some $40 Walmart fly line, only to find the equipment breaks after one season. Or, if by the grace of God, the equipment doesn’t break, they soon realize they bought crappy equipment and will want to upgrade anyway.

And $200 has been wasted.

A quality fly fishing set up not only will feel great in your hand, but will last for years and help you catch tons of fish.

Now, we also don’t recommend beginners buying a Scott Centric as their first fly rod and a Ross Evolution LTX reel.

Why? Well, first, because this will cost around $1,500. And second, most beginners won’t know the benefits of a good setup simply because they’re beginners. It takes time to appreciate the benefits of higher-end fly fishing gear.

So, what’s the solution? Never cheap out.

Instead, find the middle ground.

For around $400-$500, anglers can find a quality rod, reel, and line to get them started. Further, by buying quality equipment with solid warranties, your gear will help you be a better fly fisherman or fisherwoman, and it will last for years.

Here are 8 Reasons to Invest More in You Fly Fishing Gear:

1)      Improved Performance: Higher-quality fly fishing equipment often translates to better performance. More advanced rods, reels, lines, and other gear can enhance your casting accuracy, distance, and fishing experience.

2)      Durability: Quality gear is usually built to last. Investing in durable equipment means that you won’t have to replace or repair your gear as frequently, saving you money in the long run.

3)      Sensitivity: Premium fly rods and lines are often designed to be more sensitive, allowing you to feel subtle strikes and movements better underwater. This can lead to more successful hooksets and increased catch rates.

4)      Casting Efficiency: High-quality rods and lines can make casting easier and more efficient. They can help reduce line tangles, improve casting accuracy, and make it easier to present flies to fish in various conditions.

A good, $300 rod made by a reputable company is worth the cost, end of story.

As you progress as an angler, you will quickly notice the difference between inexpensive and high-quality rods, as better equipment will require less effort to do the job.

We rarely put $1000 Scott fly rods in the hands of a client who’s never fished before. But it’s also important to give them a tool that will help them cast with ease and land nice fish. Thus, we generally set beginner clients up with a high-end beginner rod, like an Orvis Clearwater or a Sage Foundation.

5)      Comfort: High-quality gear is often designed with ergonomics and user comfort in mind. This can make long days on the water more enjoyable and less physically demanding. When you can fish longer, your chances of catching more fish increase.

6)      Aesthetics: Some anglers take pride in owning aesthetically pleasing and well-crafted gear. Premium equipment is often designed with attention to detail and aesthetics.

We personally don’t think aesthetically beautiful fishing equipment improves my experience on the water, but I’m not everyone.

7)      Resale Value: Quality gear retains value better than lower-quality alternatives. If you decide to upgrade or change your gear down the line, you can recoup a significant portion of your investment by selling well-maintained equipment.

8)      Reduced Frustration: Lower-quality gear can lead to frustration due to issues like tangles, poor casting performance, and breakage. Investing in better gear can reduce these frustrations and make fishing trips more enjoyable.

The decision to invest more in fly fishing equipment should be based on your individual preferences, fishing goals, and budget. Before making a purchase, it’s a good idea to do thorough research, seek recommendations from experienced anglers, and even try out different equipment if possible.
